In Greek mythology, the lotus-eaters (Greek: λωτοφάγοι) were a race of people living on an island dominated by the lotus tree, a flowering plant of uncertain botanical identity. The lotus fruit was the primary food source on the island and also a narcotic, causing the inhabitants to spend their time in sleep and peaceful apathy. Visiting travellers who tasted the lotus fruit would quickly forget their home and their loved ones, longing to stay only with their fellow lotus-eaters.
